Hydroxychloroquine is a medication used to treat and prevent malaria, a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites. Additionally, it is prescribed for the management of certain autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, hydroxychloroquine gained attention as a potential treatment, although its effectiveness for this purpose remains controversial and subject to ongoing research.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Hydroxychloroquine is commonly prescribed as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It helps reduce inflammation, relieve joint pain and stiffness, and improve overall joint function in individuals with this autoimmune condition.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Hydroxychloroquine is also used in the management of systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organ systems. It helps control symptoms such as skin rash, joint pain, fatigue, and organ inflammation, and may also reduce the risk of disease flares and complications.
